Chapter 6

“Devin? What did we do?” Jessica asked as the late morning sun dove through the open blinds, shocking both of them into alertness. She pulled the sheet up to cover her nakedness. Her cheeks were bright red and she was afraid to look at Devin.

“Well,” Devin rubbed his eyes and smiled. “I think we did what we had been wanting to do.”

“Had you been wanting to do that?”

“Hell yes. Haven’t you noticed?”

Jessica licked her lips and smiled shyly. She felt Devin’s hand underneath her chin pulling her face in his direction. She peeked at him bashfully from beneath her long lashes and giggled just a little.

“You mean you haven’t been thinking of doing that?”

Wrapping her pink and black comforter around her, Jessica stood up from the bed.

“We are going to be late for work if we don’t get a move on,” she flipped her long brown hair behind her and headed into the bathroom that was across from her room.

“UGH! Work. At a time like this? Let’s call in sick. We’ve still got to figure out what to do with my sister,” Devin said, sitting up but keeping himself covered with the white sheet left on the bed.

He heard the water in the shower come on. The memory of the previous night’s lovemaking came back to him in vivid detail and Devin wanted nothing more than to join Jessica in the shower to hold her close to him. But something held him back. His heart felt like it sank a couple inches in his chest.

“What did we do?” he rubbed his chin feeling the stubble that was starting to grow. It felt so right. No words had to be said. Didn’t she feel the same way? Or did she feel that way and now she didn’t? His mind swam with worry until he heard the shower shut off.

“It isn’t going to work,” Jessica yelled to him. He felt like he had been punched.

“What? Why would you say that?”

“Because, if we both call in they’ll know something is up. We may as well go to work,” she said, wrapping a towel around her head and her body. When she appeared in the doorway with her skin still glistening and her face bright and clean, Devin smiled broadly and let out a big sigh.

“You’re right.” He quickly regained his composure. She hadn’t been talking about them. She was just talking about going to work. Yes. Work. Going there was the responsible thing to do. “We should go to work.”

“Your turn,” Jessica said, jerking her head toward the bathroom.

“Yeah, right. Cover your eyes, please. Candy store’s closed.”

“Oh my gosh! You didn’t just say that,” she rolled her eyes and bumped Devin with her hip as he passed her.

“I did and I mean it,” Devin said, yanking the sheet further around himself and shuffling off to the bathroom and shutting the door behind him.

Within an hour they were at the movie theater. Jessica had taken Devin to his house so he could take his own car.
